IAN PILLOW

CONDUCTOR

Born in Ealing, London, Ian studied viola and piano at the Royal Academy of Music, from where he went on to play the viola with the RPO, LPO, LSO, and Covent Garden Orchestras. He joined Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1966, and became its co-principal viola.  He later left the BSO to carry out a career in teaching, and conducting, before returning to the BSO, also taking an active role in its administration and education projects.  Ian works regularly with the BSO “Rusty Musicians” and in May 2013 he conducted the strings of the BSO in a joint concert with young musicians from Purbeck.

Ian is also a writer and composer.  His compositions include the unaccompanied carol “The Oxen” as well as his arrangement of “Erin’s Lament” performed at the Sherborne Community Orchestra concert in May 2013.  For a number of years he contributed a regular column “Pillow Talk” to Classic FM Magazine.

Nick Started playing the piano, and later the viola, as a child, as well as singing in the school choir.  His first foray into conducting was as a medical student, when he conducted a performance of Mozart's Requiem.  He has been an active member of choirs and orchestras from his student days, as well as a keen chamber music player.  He is a founder member of the Sherborne Community Orchestra, and has been our assistant conductor since 2005.  When not conducting the Community Orchestra, Nick plays violin or viola with us, as required.  Nick also plays the viola in the Wessex Strings, and sings bass in the Sherborne Chamber Choir.

Heidi grew up surrounded by music and, using the Suzuki method, started playing the violin aged 2. At Birmingham Conservatoire (1993-1996) her first study instrument was violin, with baroque violin. In Birrmingham she was a founding member of the Novak string quartet.

Since graduation Heidi has played and toured with the Heart of England Orchestra, The Bardi Orchestra, The New English Orchestra and The Continentals Orchestra Europe. More recently she has played with Salisbury Sinfonia, Milborne Port Opera and Wessex Strings.Heidi has taught music at Loughborough Grammar School and Clayesmore School. She currently teaches at Sherborne Prep School.
